Waratek is a one-off company with a disruptive technology (remember VMware was like this once) that forces you to reset your undertanding of how things could work. Waratek’s big idea is that you virtualize as high up the stack as you can because that gives you the best benefit in terms of sharing infrastructure.

From 2009 to 2014 Dr Mike Norman was the Analyst at The Virtualization Practice for Open Source Cloud Computing. He covered PaaS, IaaS and associated services such as Database as a Service from an open source development and DevOps perspective. He has hands-on experience in many open source cloud technologies, and an extensive background in application lifecycle tooling; automated testing – functional, non-functional and security; digital business and DevOps. in 2014 he moved on to become Cloud Services Architect at JP Morgan Chase.
Does the Cloud Need a New Programming Language?
The question of whether there is a specific cloud programming language has emerged in our internal discussions at TVP. We’ve noticed a tendency amongst “born in the cloud” companies like Cloud Physics to follow the example of Twitter and develop server-side components in the Scala programming language. Scala runs on the JVM and is supported by a significant number of PaaS, including CloudFoundry. Does this mean that enterprises moving to PaaS should now be coding in Scala?

PaaS vendor AppFog acquires Nodester
AppFog, the Universal PaaS company formerly know as PHP Fog, has acquired Nodester, a framework-specific PaaS vendor for Node.js (server-side javascript) applications.
Xeround – Free Database as a Service for PaaS
Xeround is a SQL Database as a Service vendor which is aggressively targeting the PaaS vendors as a channel. It has established relationships with Heroku, Engine Yard, AppFog and AppHarbour so that if you subscribe to their PaaS you are offered an upgrade to their bundled MySQL database services through a service from Xeround.
VMworld 2012: VMware joins OpenStack
Some interesting news about VMWare was made public on Sunday 26th August – the day before VMWorld – that VMware joins OpenStack. This appears to be driven largely by the acquisition of Nicira – and the role that Nicira currently plays in the implementation of virtual networking in OpenStack.
