On the 11/1 Virtualization Security podcast we had no special guest but continued a conversation started at Hacker Halted this year. It is the ongoing question of whether or not Going to the cloud will cause jobs to be lost. The typical answer was stated at Hacker Halted, that people will need to cross-train with new products, etc. and then they would keep their jobs, but someone stood up and shouted out that this was hogwash. It made a lively discussion from there. So we tackled it on the podcast as well. Will people loose jobs Going to the Cloud? If so how can this be prevented? What do you as IT professionals need to do, to plan your careers while going to the cloud?

Hotlink’s Cross-Platform Management Technology
One of the companies and technology to watch is Hotlink with its Cross Platform Management Technology (winner of Best of Show, VMworld 2012). If you have not heard of this before I think you will in the near future. This technology allows you to use VMware’s vCenter Server to manage and control all major hypervisors and public clouds to include VMware vSphere, Microsoft Hyper-V, Citrix XenServer, Red Hat Enterprise Linux (KVM), CloudStack, and Amazon EC2 all from within VMware vCenter.
News: VDI Startup Pano Logic Shuts Down
It has just been revealed that Bay Area desktop virtualization startup Pano Logic has shut down. The news comes from a surprising source, The Credit Union Times, which scooped the IT world to the news. The news was confirmed by a former Pano Logic employee who requested not to be named.
Citrix Remote PC: VDI complexity solved, or a kick start to a VDI project?
Delivering VDI can be an expensive and time consuming undertaking. Especially when the business case is limited to remote access. There are solutions allowing remote access to a desktop/laptop device: Citrix’s own GoToMyPC has competition from the likes of LogMeIn, Teamviewer, TightVNC and YuuGuu. However, there is always concern about introducing such solutions in terms of “who now has access?”, and “how do we manage it?”. With Citrix Remote PC organisations can have centralized control over services such as printing, clipboard, and local drive access as well as automated provisioning of PC to end-users, combined with the high performance and client compatibility of Citrix HDX. Simples?
