Past and current partners have made a number of end-of-year announcements that have crossed our news desk. Some convey significant changes, others incremental changes. Some even herald complete turnarounds in direction. Starting with this article, we plan to bring you a monthly synopsis of the announcements our news desk receives. Without further ado, here is our This is New list for December 2017:

Data Protection

  • Cristie Software announced a partnership with Veeam to provide backup services for AIX and Solaris systems. Managed from within Veeam, Veeam’s data protection system can now protect AIX and Solaris systems using Cristie Software.
  • Veeam announced updates to its agent technology for Linux and Windows. v2 of Veeam Agent for Linux has various improvements and support for more Veeam products for backup management—Veeam Scale-out Backup Repository, Veeam Cloud Connect, and Veeam Backup & Replication—not to mention source-side encryption and other overall improvements.

Security

  • HyTrust announced CloudAdvisor. CloudAdvisor, Hytrust’s name for DataGravity, allows HyTrust to delve into data to advise regarding where sensitive data is within clouds and how best to protect that data.
  • AstroArch Consulting’s SecureESX DISA STIG and VMware Security Configuration Guide Scanner for VMware vSphere is now available.
  • Fortinet extended its cloud security applications portfolio into Amazon Web Services. Fortinet’s Global Threat Landscape Report shows highly automated attacks and swarm technology becoming the norm.

End User Computing

  • Citrix XenApp and XenDesktop services are now available in Oracle’s cloud. This continues Citrix’s expansion into the public cloud arena.

SDDC and Hybrid Cloud

  • ZeroStack’s DevOps Workbench has grown to include OpenMake. DevOps Workbench has 30+ DevOps tools installed in a single click.
  • ioFABRIC is combating ransomware with its immutable snapshot technology.

IT as a Service

  • Densify’s latest survey reveals that there is a massive misalignment between public cloud usage and application needs. This misalignment is costing companies billions of dollars a year.
  • Turbonomic has joined the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF), expressing its commitment to Kubernetes and cloud-native applications. Turbonomic has been committed to container technologies in its own product development and product features for years.
  • Zenoss has expanded its Software-Defined IT Operations into Amazon Web Services. In addition, Zenoss has announced the 3rd Annual Global ZenPack Challenge to be held at GalaxZ18 (June 20–22, 2018).
  • ManageEngine continues in the security marketplace with its ManageEngine privileged identity management (PIM) suite to combat identity theft.
  • Splunk has further integrated with Amazon Web Services to deliver real-time analytics to impact security via integrations with Amazon Kinesis Firehose and GuardDuty.
  • Virtual Instruments has integrated more of its Xangati purchase to deliver the VirtualWisdom 5.4 App-centric Infrastructure Performance Management platform. App-centric allows one to see the application and its impact upon infrastructure, and vice versa.
  • New Relic has enhanced its offerings within Amazon Web Services.

The above is just a short synopsis of the industry, yet we can see from these announcements that moving applications to the cloud will continue to accelerate, that vendors are also moving their products to the cloud, and that the hybrid cloud is doing well and still growing. While we are a little shy on end user computing news, most of the big news for EUC came out during VMworld this year. That big news was NVIDIA’s technology demo of virtual GPU vMotion.
