Late Tuesday, November 17, Citrix provided a public operational review update. The short summary is that the GoTo products will be spun off into an independent business, Citrix is focusing on its core competencies, and 1,000 people have been laid off. Having talked to a few people at Citrix, I know that these are challenging times.

How good an idea to Virtualize XenApp? There were a number of benefits identified way back then: hardware abstraction allowing easier image management and OS upgrades; options for higher availability and faster recovery; even fail-over. Virtualization enabled silo consolidation and importantly enabled better management of user capacity on servers. However, there is a price. Reduced density and performance. Not all applications will benefit. That said, the flexibility that virtualization of XenApp offers is likely of greater benefit to many organisations.
Bromium have released vSentry 1.1 which will brings Bromium’s benefits of micro-virtualization and hardware based security to a far wider range of enterprise desktops. New features include wider OS Support: Live Attack Visualization and Analysis (LAVA) and the Bromium Management Server. There are still components of an enterprise desktop strategy that aren’t accommodated, but vSentry 1.1 has components that broaden the use cases deploying Bromium’s trustworthy computing service and expand the capabilities for those managing the service.
At Citrix Synergy in Barcelona, this was a very good question that a number of partners were reporting their customers were asking. Citrix XenApp 6.5 is a market leading product.
