VMware announced its new Horizon 6 product yesterday. The key new aspect of this offering is the addition of published application functionality, meaning that Horizon now competes directly with Citrix XenApp in addition to XenDesktop.
With so many vendors in the virtualization marketplace, new products are released daily, and only some of them will ultimately prove to be successful. The competition for both mindshare and wallet is fierce, and this is forcing new vendors in particular to simplify new products brought into the marketplace in order to achieve success.
As part of the XenApp 7.5 release, Citrix will include AppDNA with the Platinum edition. When considering the new version, some may be questioning the key benefits of XenApp 7.5 Platinum and comparing them with the package value-add that had been incorporated into XenApp 6.x Platinum.
Technology vendors overwhelmingly believe that just because a new version of a product is made available to the marketplace, virtualization technologists will embrace it. However, in order for technologists to move to the newer version, it must: Be technically superior Be easier to administer/maintain Address a compelling business solution.
Last week, Citrix announced the release of XenApp 7.5, which will be available in March. Although the touted features focus on mobility and cloud integration, there’s a key underlying message within this announcement: “Long live virtualized applications and XenApp as a product!”
